Rivian Automotive EOL/RPV Expansions
The Customer Challenge
With the demand for electric vehicles on the rise, Rivian Automotive purchased and expanded a legacy Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois to support production of the R1T, R1S, and RPV vans. Recognized for our leading track-record, Sylvan was awarded with the mechanical work for these expansions. Our challenge included installing piping and HVAC units throughout the existing building, along with three expansion areas, and leading the BIM modeling process for all trades.
The Sylvan Solution
Because of the continuous evolving work designand compressed schedule, Sylvan ensured constant communication with the partner, owner, other subcontractors, and the owner’s process equipment contractors. Our team installed approximately 6 miles of process/HVAC pipe and ductwork, including Chilled Water, Weld Water, Compressed Air, and Natural Gas systems. We also furnished and installed 10 custom air handling units, 4 packaged rooftop units, 11 pumps, and a dedicated weld water cooling system.
The Result
Despite the aggressive schedules, Sylvan rose to the challenge. Thanks to careful planning and a combined effort, all phases of the project were executed on time with no safety incidents to report. Rivian’s R1T, R1S, and RPV vans were able to begin production in preparation for release. Our team is excited to see where the new EV industry soars!
