University of Tennessee Steam Upgrades

Sylvan performed a major upgrade to the University of Tennessee’s main stream system, which supports approximately 75% of campus operations. The project included the installation of:

• 1,000 feet of 12-inch underground high-pressure steam piping
• 1,000 feet of 6-inch underground condensate piping
• Construction of three steam vaults within an active roadway
• 600 feet of 12-inch high-pressure steam piping inside Neyland Stadium
• 600 feet of 6-inch condensate piping inside the stadium

Work inside the stadium was successfully executed during football season, while the underground utility installation was completed during the football off-season and concurrently with active campus operations during the academic year.

A significant challenge of the project was performing construction along Philip Fulmer Drive, one of the busiest corridors on campus. This roadway serves as the primary access route for approximately 100,000 attendees traveling to Neyland Stadium and more than 24,000 visitors attending events at Thompson-Boiling Arena.

The project was completed successfully through the dedication, coordination, and expertise of Sylvan’s skilled workforce. Despite complex scheduling constraints and high-traffic working conditions, the team delivered all aspects of the project safely and efficiently. The successful completion of this steam infrastructure upgrade demonstrated Sylvan’s ability to support critical campus utilities while meeting the growing operational demands of a major university environment.
