Electrical/Controls Engineer I – Conveyor Division

The Electrical / Controls Engineer will be responsible to oversee and coordinate electrical and controls design, installation, and startup for material handling systems. This position will be responsible for confirming electrical and controls designs meet all requirements per the customer scope of work and Sylvan clarifications as indicated in the bid submittal.  This position will work directly with the Project Manager and Mechanical Engineers assigned to the project.


Job Responsibilities

  • Good communication skills; will interface with project management, engineering teams, customer, and subcontractors.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office applications; Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Projects.
  • Ability to work with 2D CAD program (3D design experience preferred).
  • Understanding of basic electrical theory
  • Understand calculations for sizing conductors, transformers, and circuit protection as it applies to electrical loading and voltage drop in single phase, three phase, and direct current applications.
  • Understanding of motor control circuits; control relays, motor starter, soft starter, and variable frequency drives (VFD).
  • Understanding of programmable logic controllers (PLC) and have ability to troubleshoot and modify ladder logic.
  • Understanding of human machine interface (HMI).
  • Must be able work with the project team to create a working solution to technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Be able to check drawings from other team members before sending to the shop or sub-fabrication source.
  • Be able to visit jobsites for meetings and field checks as requested.
  • Keep up to date with the latest customer specifications and ensure all designs meet all Sylvan and Customer requirements.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related technical field in Industrial Controls.

Experience

  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a professional, positive “can-do” attitude.
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a timely manner within a high-pressure environment.
  • Familiar with Autodesk brand of products; AutoCAD, Inventor, Navisworks, and Vault.
  • Working knowledge of Rockwell Automation PLCs; PLC5, SLC, CLx, and GLx – Ladder logic, function block, and structured text are the 3 most-used programming languages in automotive. Ladder being the most common.
  • Working knowledge of Rockwell Automation HMIs; FactoryTalk View.
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet/IP networks using managed switches in either star or ring topologies.
  • Implementing a multi-level Ethernet/IP network including the use of VLANs for traffic control and robustnes.
  • Experience performing all calculations required for a project from “cradle to grave”.
  • Calculating electrical loads and sizing distribution panels.
  • Calculating voltage drop and optimizing panel placements and/or circuit designs.
  • Calculating heat loss for panels and implementing control methods; fans, A/C.
  • Performing safety calculations for machine reaction and stop times.
  • Perform Cycle Time Studies – understand the mechanical design of equipment and how to identify limitations.
  • Understanding of pneumatics
  • Valve and cylinder nomenclature.
  • Calculating airline and valve size based on cylinder size, air pressure, and cycle time requirements.
