The Engineering Manager will be responsible to understand customer requirements, provide design guidance, and manage the value engineering effort in conjunction with the Pre-construction- detailing group.  Multi-tasking and time management skills will be essential in managing multiple iterations of multiple project phases concurrently.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct Sylvan Project Engineering and Estimating staff assigned to project.
  • Participate in daily customer meetings to establish and refine design parameters.
  • Detailed design (i.e., pipe/duct sizing, routing, etc.) based on evolving customer requirements.  Close coordination with Drafting and Estimating group for value engineering pricing support.
  • Effective, clear & timely communication to Project Management and customer team members.
  • Review project forecast weekly with Project Controls and sales team.
  • Provide weekly manpower assignments and working hours for Estimating personnel to project manager to be able to maintain the agreed upon schedule.  Maintain two week estimating workload forecast.
  • Coach, mentor, motivate, train, and supervise Project Engineering team members and sub-contractors.
  • Ensure all designs meet or exceed the customers’ expectations and are within the original budget and Sylvan guidelines.
  • Regular travel to project sites will be required.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and 10 years comfort HVAC engineering, plumbing and process mechanical experience and be able to lead and train the Sylvan engineering staff.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred.


  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ Mechanical Engineering in the industrial piping/HVAC space.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Can conform to shifting priorities due to demands and timeline changes from Project Manager and customer.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a professional, positive “can-do” attitude.
  • Possess excellent communication skills to effectively interface and negotiate.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Revit.  Primavera P6 experience preferred, but not necessary.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to identify work scope changes and communicate with Project Manager.
